Caregiver Support
The “Sandwich Generation” is a common description for those with the dual responsibility of caring for both children and aging parents. As life span extends, another phenomenon is emerging – that of retirees taking responsibility for parents of old age.
Research tells us:
- Elderly spousal caregivers who experienced caregiver stress had a mortality risk that was 63% higher than that of individuals in a control group.
- The incidence of caregiver anxiety and depression is higher than the non-caregiver population.
- As many as 80% of persons with dementia are cared for at home by family members. Caring for someone with this disease is associated with a higher level of stress than caring for someone with impairment from other types of chronic illness.
