The Caregiver Burden
Caregiver burden is a term used to describe the physical, emotional and financial toll of providing elder care. When a caregiver’s personal needs are chronically neglected, caregiver burden can result in physical and emotional problems. Answer the following questions to discover if you are at risk for caregiver burden.
- I am the sole provider of care for my loved one.
- Other family members fail to recognize and value my caregiving efforts.
- I lack the time to take care of my own physical, social and emotional needs.
- Members of my immediate family feel “cheated” because they want or need more of my time and attention.
- I feel angry about my situation and, at the same time, experience guilt for having these feelings.
- My quality of life has changed significantly since assuming my caregiver role.
