Post-Hospitalization Complications
“I had such a difficult time balancing work and taking care of Mother. Adding some help during the day allowed me to focus on work when I was there, without all the guilt. It also relieved my anxiety about Mother falling and re-injuring herself. I can’t thank you enough for helping us get through this difficult time.”
Daughter & primary caregiver
Technology is dramatically shortening the length of stay in a hospital. Whether admitted for a surgical procedure or medical complication, elders are likely to be discharged before they have fully recovered their stamina. If complications occur, such as a wound infection or reaction to medication, recovery can be further delayed. For many frail elders, a hospital admission is usually followed by a stay in a rehabilitation hospital post-discharge. For those who can return home, assistance with numerous activities of daily living may be required.
Meet Mrs. Thompson
The Situation
The hip-replacement procedure went well, but recovery has been slower than expected. After 3 weeks of skilled care in a rehabilitation center, Mrs. Thompson is ready for discharge, but she remains unsteady on her feet and has little interest in eating. She will need to attend an outpatient rehabilitation program 3 days a week. Her daughter – and primary caregiver – has to return to work.
The Solution
Mature Options provided companion services for Mrs. Thompson from 9AM to 4PM for 6 weeks. The companion prepared meals, provided medication reminders, drove Mrs. Thompson to the rehabilitation center and coached her in the exercise routine ordered by the physical therapist.
