Senior Caregiver Roles

A client’s self-care abilities and limitations determine the level of caregiver that must be assigned to their case.

Senior Companions

Senior companions are individuals who have been screened for experience in caring for an elder, but have no formal training in personal care. Companions monitor safety, offer medication reminders, assist with household tasks and meal preparation, provide transportation, and encourage socialization. They may provide cues and minimal assistance with tasks such as bathing, dressing, grooming and ambulation.

Certified Nurse Aides (CNA) or Personal Care Assistants (PCA)

Certified Nurse Aides or Personal Care Assistants are individuals who have received formal training in personal care and are certified by the Virginia Department of Health Professions. A CNA may provide a senior assistance with bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulation, dressing and grooming, as well as all tasks performed by a companion.

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN)

Licensed Practical Nurses are individuals who have completed a two-year program of formal study of nursing and are licensed by the Virginia Department of Health Professions. A certified LPN may administer medications and perform procedures, such as tube feedings or catheterizations, as well as assist with all tasks in the Certified Nurse Aide role.
